Not Butch Cassidy
Vernal, May 16 – The news of killing of “Butch” Cassidy and Joe
Walker and the capture of two others of the gang of outlaws is causing no
end of comment and for the time has supplanted war talk. The Castle valley
posse are certainly to be congratulated on their success. Many expressions
of commendation are heard. It is believed by some that a portion of the
gang are now in this section, and a sharp look out will be kept. Leigh,
who is said to be one of the two men captured, is well known here in some
quarters, and has a wife and child who live near Vernal. Those who are
acquainted with him express the opinion that he is not really a bad man,
but, having drifted into bad company, has found it difficult to cut loose
from his lawless associates. For some reasons there are many expressions
of doubt here as to the killing of Cassidy, one individual saying he would
wager $110 (?) that Cassidy was alive and well. The interest the state is
taking in the welfare of the border counties is very gratifying to the
law-respecting people here. – Herald.
