Delta, Colo., Sept. 11 – The two men who were killed
last Thursday while attempting to escape, after
robbing the Farmers’ and Merchants’ bank and killing
its cashier, were positively identified as Tom and
Fred McCarty, father and son. The third man who
participated in the robbery but escaped is Billy
McCarty, also a son of Tom McCarty. These men
constitute the McCarty gang of Oregon, and are
wanted there for robbing stages and the United
States mails. There is a reward of $10,000 for them
on that account.
The dead men were exhumed and identified by Sheriff
Condeo of Baker City, Oregon, who attempted to
arrest them in Oregon, but was prevented by the
McCarty’s getting the drop on him. Ex-Chief of
Police Farley of Denver also knows the gang and says
Tom McCarty is the man who robbed President Moffatt
of the First National bank of that city some years
ago, securing $21,000.
Budd Taylor of Moab, Utah, who claims to be a
relative by marriage to the McCarty family, also
identified the men. Billy McCarty, the escaped
robber is still at large, but the pursuit has not
been given up.
For several days a detective of the Pinkerton
agency, whose headquarters are in Oregon, has been
in Ogden for the purpose of gathering up some
information regarding the McCarty boys, but as soon
as the news was received that the two robbers had
been identified he was released from his duties here
and returned to the northwest. The officer was the
guest Sheriff Belnap while here and from him
received all of the information which he gleaned
regarding the famous bandits. The detective stated
that it was all a mistake regarding the reward, for
the reason that no such amount of money has ever
been offered for their capture. Sheriff Belnap is
the possessor of a great deal of information in
connection with the McCartys and in case of certain
results will use it to the advantage of himself and
the law-abiding citizens of the country. Early in
the spring both Bill and Tom McCarty were in Ogden
and shipped supplies to Moab, Utah, for several
months, evidently for the purpose of stocking up for
the season. Their rendezvous is near Moab, where
they have a number of relatives. Belnap has photos
of both Bill and Tom. |
