Montana Authorities And Longbaugh Case
Helena, Mont., Nov. 12. – Attorney C.N. Pray of
Choteau county, called on Gov. Toole yesterday with a view to applying for
a requisition for Harry Longbaugh, the alleged Great Northern train
robber, who is in custody at St. Louis. At the suggestion of the governor
County Attorney Pray concluded to defer applying for a requisition until
he had received more definite advices as to the intention of the Federal
authorities with respect to Longbaugh.
Governor Toole believes it is the intention of the
authorities in Missouri to prosecute Longbaugh for forging a signature to
a National bank of Montana note. If the Federal authorities prosecute
Longbaugh and think they can make out a case, the state of Montana will
save the cost of bringing him back and trying him, said Governor Toole
this afternoon. A conviction in St. Louis will satisfy the ends of justice
quite as well as one in Montana would.
Governor Toole said that if it were proven that
Longbaugh was one of the Wagner train robbers a proportional part of the
reward of $1,000 offered by Lieut. Gov. Higgins, acting governor at the
time of the robbery, for the capture of the robbers, would be paid.
County Attorney Pray said today that in the event
Longbaugh was tried in Missouri and not convicted, he would take him to
Choteau county for trial, if he should get him
