Price, Utah, March 27,--News is just
received here from Emery county of the shooting of
Sheriff Tutttle of Orangeville by Joe Walker. It
occurred in a box canyon down on the San Rafael
River some time yesterday morning, and happened in
this wise: J.M. Whitmore recently lost his three
saddle-horses from his barn in Price, and Walker was
suspected of the theft. Men have been on the trail
for some days, and a few days ago J.M. Whitmore, M.C.
Wilson, J.M. Thomas and C.L. Maxwell went south and,
with Sheriff Tuttle, took up Walker’s trail east on
to the San Rafael. For two days the bandit was
cornered in a narrow box canyon where it is next to
impossible to get out when both ends are guarded,
and yesterday morning the posse entered the canyon
and finally came upon the fugitive. The men were
separated and Tuttle being near to Walker,
dismounted because of the difficulty in getting over
the rocks, and was trying to get in a position of
safety where he might get his man. Walker shot him,
however, before he had time to act. The ball
penetrated the right thigh near the hip and the bone
was fractured. Walker had discarded his foot up on
the rugged mountain side. Thomas is reported to have
followed on Walker’s trail while Wilson, another of
the party, rode to Cleveland and telephoned to
Orangeville for Dr. Winters to meet the men bringing
in the wounded Sheriff. The two other posses were
organized in Huntington and Castle Gate and are
scouring the county in the wake of the escaping man.
THE LATEST WORD
from Orangeville telephone is that
Tuttle had arrived and is resting quietly. The full
extent of his injury is not yet reported. Whitmore
and Wilson are expected to return to Price tonight,
when more particulars can be had.
There is an organized gang of cattle
and horse-thieves down in that country, and citizens
vow that it must be broken up. |
