Huntington, Utah, March 30 – Sheriff
Tuttle was seen by a representative of The Tribune
yesterday, and appeared in the best of spirits
considering the wound and the long exposure of two
nights and days. The Sheriff’s leg is broken, and
grave fears are entertained that his leg will have
to be amputated. Several posses are out scouring the
country, but the general opinion is that the posses
are not able to capture the gang,
If rumors are correct, there is a
gang of outlaws from Vernal to New Mexico,
plundering and killing cattle and horses as they
please, as well as disposing of them whenever their
purses get empty. The people are indignant that the
county officials have not made any move towards
capturing Joe Walker or the gang. It seems that a
small reward of at least $250 could have been
offered so as to justify men in at least losing
their time, to say nothing of running the danger of
being killed. The Prosecuting Attorney has not even
inquired concerning the Sheriff’s condition, or made
any move toward having a deputy appointed, or having
a warrant issued for Walker’s arrest. The men who
are out are on their own responsibility.
The people of Emery county are not
satisfied with the treatment received by Carbon
county in not lending a hand toward capturing the
outlaws.
The Sheriff of Carbon county was
expected to have gone with Sheriff Tuttle, but that
officer did not make his appearance.
It is reasonable to believe that the
Governor will be appealed to for aid as Emery county
hasn’t men enough to capture the gang.
It is rumored that one of the McCarty
boys is in the gang, as well as Kofferd(?) and
Mickel, the slayers of Sheriff Burns. The gang is
fortified and could withstand Uncle Sam’s army if
provisions and ammunition would hold out |
