LEFT THE ROOST FOR THE WAR
One of the Outlaws Fell in Cuba and Another is in the Philippines.

There are two members of the Utah Robbers’ Roost gang, it is believed, for whom the officers do not need to look. Lew McCarty and David Lant, who have been considered two of the worst men in the famous gang of modern brigands, are said to be where officers of the law cannot touch them. This is especially true in the case of McCarthy. This daring young fellow, a brother of Tom McCarty, who robbed the Montpelier bank, joined the Roosevelt rough riders at San Antonio under an assumed name and it is said fell in the charge at San Juan hill. He and John Malmgren had been arrested or cattle stealing in Sanpete county and while being taken to the court-room for sentence escaped from the bailiff and joined the gang. It is known that McCarty disappeared from the roost a short time before the Roosevelt regiment was recruited.

David Lant is believed to be with the First California regiment in Manila. A detective who was acquainted with Lant has said that he is satisfied the young fellow joined the regiment at San Francisco and went with them to the Philippines. Lant was one of four convicts who escaped from the Utah penitentiary in October 1897. His home is in Payson, Utah.
