Santa Clara Man Reflects on Cassidy Legend
Many mysteries surround the death of the legendary Robert LeRoy Parker, aka Butch Cassidy. Though historical common belief has it that Cassidy died in South America in the early 1900s, many residents of his hometown of Circleville, Utah, claimed Cassidy sightings long after his supposed 1908 death. Santa Clara resident Donald Whittaker, who hails from Circleville, worked as a cowhand for Cassidy's youngest brother, Ebenezer Parker. Whittaker said Cassidy's family kept mum about the infamous outlaw's whereabouts in those days, but he believes Cassidy did, in fact, return to the United States after his alleged double-suicide with partner-in-crime Harry Longabaugh, aka the Sundance Kid. - Read more at the Hurricane Valley Journal

Peaceful Piece of KC's Past Threatened

There's at least one thing that Kansas City park pioneer August Meyer, Jesse James' wife, Zerelda, meatpacker Kirkland Armour and shameless madam Annie Chambers have in common.

They all share the sod of Kansas City's Elmwood Cemetery. In this place, folks who would have shot each other dead during the Missouri-Kansas border wars now lie in repose.

The peace is perpetual, but will their graves be remembered?- KansasCity.com

Happy 50th, Belle - Durgango Herald
It may not be the oldest business in Durango - the train pre-dates the town, after all - but no building embodies the city's history quite like the Strater Hotel.

This Friday, the Strater will kick off a weeklong birthday party for two as the Diamond Belle Saloon celebrates its golden anniversary in the 120th year of the hotel's existence.

In the years since Henry Strater opened the "Strater House" in 1887, the four-story, red brick landmark has welcomed the rich and famous from all walks of life.

A partial list of notables includes legends of the West - Louis L'Amour, Otto Mears and Butch Cassidy's Hole in the Wall Gang (under an alias); politicians - Jack and Bobby Kennedy, Gerald Ford and Ambassador Leonard Firestone (son of the tire magnate); and celebrities galore, including General Tom Thumb, Will Rogers, Chevy Chase and Christie Brinkley (a scene from the movie "Vacation" was filmed in the lobby), Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. - Durango Herald
