In early 1901, the
Sundance Kid and Etta Place checked into Dr. Pierce’s Invalids Hotel in
Buffalo, New York for undisclosed ailments.
Dr. Ray Vaughn Pierce
was born in Starke, New York on August 6, 1840. In 1867 he founded the
World’s Dispensary. Successful in the medical profession, between 1867
and 1880 his enterprises took in nearly $500,000.
In 1878, Pierce was
elected as a state Senator in New York, serving one year before moving on
to congress as a Republican. Again Pierce only served one year, this time
resigning his position due to poor health.
Dr. Pierce’s book,
The People’s Common Sense Medical Advisor, sold over two million copies,
and can still be found on ebay. Some of Dr. Pierce’s creations include,
Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discover, Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant Pills and
Smart Weed. It is said that many of Dr. Pierce’s medicines contained
opium.
Dr.
Piece died in St. Vincent’s, Florida on February 4, 1914 at the age of
73.
