Fannie Porter was born
in England sometime in February 1873. While there is little information
related to her childhood, we do know that she moved to the United States
when she was a year old. By the end of the 1800’s Porter was widowed and
was operating a brothel located at 505 South San Sabo St. in San Antonio,
Texas.
Author James D. Horan
described Porter as, “a hard, shrewd woman…well known to the law. More
than once she had chased an officer from her place with a broom.”
Many historians believe
it was at Fannie Porter’s brothel that the Sundance Kid first met
Etta Place. It is also said that Harvey Logan met his girlfriend, Annie Rogers,
through the brothel.
Aside from operating as
something of a Wild Bunch dating service, the brothel offered the outlaws
a haven where they could relax, party and unload some of their ill-gotten
fortune.
Fannie Porter is often
confused with another madam by the name of Mary Porter who operated out of
Fort Worth, Texas. Despite their last names and chosen careers, there is
no connection between the two women.
It
is unknown when Porter died, but legend has it she perished in a car
accident in El Paso.
