George Stuart Nixon was
born in Placer County, California on April 2, 1860. After attending public
school, he went to work for a railroad company. In 1881 he transferred to
Nevada where he helped found the First National Bank of
Winnemucca, acting
as its head cashier. Nixon was present at the bank during the robbery by
the Wild Bunch on September 19, 1900. Some suspected Nixon was involved in
the planning of the robbery, but that notion was later dropped.
After starting a
political career serving in the Nevada House of Representatives in 1891,
Nixon later moved on to represent Nevada as a United States senator from
March 4, 1905 until his death June 5,1912. While serving the Senate, Nixon
was chair of the Committee on Coast Defenses. In addition to his banking
and political life, Nixon built an opera house in Reno and a theater in
Winnemucca.
George
S. Nixon is interred in the Masonic Cemetery in Reno, Nevada.
