Laura Bullion was born
in Knickerbocker, Texas sometime in the 1870’s. Bullion may have been a
former prostitute – a description filled out following her 1901 arrest
in St. Louis lists prostitute as her occupation. If this was her
profession, she was not alone; fellow Wild Bunch women Etta
Place, Callie
May Hunt and Annie Rogers are all believed to have been prostitutes, a
career choice the Wild Bunch seemed to favor in their women.
Bullion was involved
with Wild Bunch member Will Carver before he left her to marry Callie May
Hunt. Following their break-up, Bullion became involved with “The Tall
Texan” Ben Kilpatrick.
Bullion is believed to
have joined the Wild Bunch in the August 29, 1900 robbery of a Union
Pacific train outside Tipton, Wyoming.
A year later on
November 5, 1901 later Ben Kilpatrick was arrested for passing stolen bank
notes in St. Louis, Missouri. Bullion was arrested the following day.
On December 12, 1901
the pair pleaded guilty to passing and forging stolen bank noted. Bullion
received five years in the Massachusetts State Women’s Prison. Her lover
received 15 years.
It is said that after
she was released from prison Bullion moved to Atlanta, Georgia to closer
to Kilpatrick who was serving out his sentence in the federal penitentiary
there. The wait may have outlasted true love however as another story has
Bullion hooking up with a rancher and living the quiet life.
Laura
Bullion died in Memphis, Tennessee in 1961.
