The Logan Brothers
Along with their parents, the Logan
siblings – Harvey, James W., Denver Henry, John A., Loranzo
“Lonnie,” and sister Arda “Allie” – moved to Dodson, Missouri
shortly after Harvey Logan’s birth in 1867.
After their parents died, brothers
Harvey, John and Lonnie moved to Landusky, Montana. The brothers soon
found themselves embroiled in a feud with their neighbor, and town founder,
Powell “Pike” Landusky. Further adding fuel to this fire, Lonnie Logan
fooled around and got one of Landusky’s stepdaughters, Elfie, pregnant.
The feud came to a tragic close on
December 27, 1894. Harvey Logan confronted Landusky in the local saloon
and a fistfight broke out. Landusky grabbed for his pistol and pulled the
trigger, but the weapon misfired. That was all the time needed for Logan
to draw his weapon and put an end to Landusky’s life.
Fearing the law, Logan high-tailed it out
of the area. His brother’s chose to stay in Landusky.
In February 1896, after a long running
feud over homesteading rights, Jim Winters killed John Logan near
Landusky, Montana.
After leaving his former life behind, Harvey
Logan answered the call of the outlaw trail. As a tribute to his mentor,
George “Flat Nose” Currie, Logan took on the alias Kid Curry, a name
that would soon become synonymous with killer. Logan eventually joined the
Wild Bunch and rode with the outlaws on a number of robberies.
Lonnie Logan eventually moved to Harlem,
Montana where he became a partner in a saloon.
Lonnie may have joined his brother and
the Wild Bunch during the Butte County Bank robbery in Belle Fourche,
South Dakota on June 28, 1897. Following the outlaws escape, a posse caught
up with the Logan’s and “Flat Nose” Currie. A firefight broke out
and Harvey Logan shot and killed Sheriff Josiah
Hazen.
Lonnie is believed to be one of the men
involved in the June 2, 1899 robbery of a Union Pacific train near Wilcox,
Wyoming.
Officers caught up with Lonnie Logan
in Dodson, Missouri on February 28, 1900, there was no escape. Logan tried
to sneak out the back door but was spotted by Pinkerton agents and killed
instantly by gunfire. Loranzo Dow Logan is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery
in Kansas City, MO.
Five years after his brother Johnny’s death, Harvey Logan laid in wait for Jim Winters and
shot him down in cold blood on July 26, 1901. Logan had finally settled
the score.
Three fourths of his
brothers gone, Harvey Logan continued to live the outlaw life. On June 7,
1904 Logan participated in the robbery of a Denver & Rio Grande train
near Parachute, Colorado. Two days later a posse caught up with the
outlaws and Logan was wounded in the following shootout. Rather than
surrender and face prison, Logan ended his own life.
From all accounts, Henry Logan went on to
live a quiet and law-abiding life, avoiding the tragedy that befell his
three brothers.
