According to a wanted
poster released by the Great Northern Railroad, Orlando Camilla Hanks –
better known as O.C. Hanks – was raised near Las Vegas, New
Mexico.
Other reports have Hanks born and raised near Yorktown, Texas sometime in
December 1861.
Hanks has been described
as keeping his head slightly tilted to the left and somewhat deaf. His
hearing problem lead to the nickname of “Deaf Charley.”
In 1892 Hanks was
arrested in Teton County, Montana and served ten years at the Montana
State Penitentiary for robbing a Northern Pacific train near Big Timber,
Wyoming (an alternate date for this robber is given as August 1893). Hanks
was released April 30, 1901.
Free from prison, Hanks
may have joined members of the Wild Bunch in the July 3, 1901 robbery of a
Great Northern Train near Wagner, Montana.
Less
than a year after the Wagner holdup, on April 15, 1902, Hanks luck ran out
in San Antonio, Texas. Three officers approached Hanks in a saloon and
attempted to arrest him. Hanks foolishly reached for his gun and was shot
and killed by the officers.
