Robert Allan Pinkerton, and his twin sister Joan, was born on December 2, 1848.

When he was old enough, Robert joined his brother William to work with their father Allan Pinkerton at the family business. While William had a hunger for the thrill of the chase and thus spent much of his time pursuing outlaws across the country, Robert found his place as an administrator.

It was Robert Pinkerton that helped his father implement a filing system to track criminals. This system soon became the model for other law enforcement agencies, including the FBI.

When their father passed away, William and Robert took over the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, working together as joint head’s of the company. They continued to hunt down outlaws and ran the company in the spirit of their father. Among the outlaws the Pinkertons pursued during Robert’s tenure with the company are Jesse James, Cole Younger, members of the Wild Bunch and the Ketchum Gang.

In February 1903. Robert Pinkerton alerted the president of the UPRR that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were discovered in South America. Pinkerton had hoped to drum up support to send operatives into South America to apprehend the outlaws and bring them to justice. The railroads were of the mind that as long as the outlaws were in South America, they couldn’t rob their trains in the states and preferred to let sleeping dogs lie. Pinkerton eventually gave up on the issue.

Robert Allan Pinkerton died in 1907. Following his brother William’s death in 1923, Robert’s son Allan took over the family business.
