"Some people have analysis. I have
Utah." - Robert Redford
Robert Redford
was born Charles Robert Redford Jr. was born August 18, 1937 in Santa
Monica, California. Redford graduated from high school in 1955. Three
years later he married Lola Van Wagenen. The couple divorced in 1985.
Redford began
his acting career in the theater, Broadway and television before landing
his first feature film role in 1962’s War Hunt. At the age of 32, the
actor landed his breakthrough role as the Sundance Kid in 1969’s Butch
Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The film would make Redford a household
name.
Famous for
environmental activism, Redford helped found the Natural Resources Defense
Council in 1970. A resident of Utah since the 1960’s, Redford founded
the Sundance Institute in his home state. The institute was established to
encourage the work of independent filmmakers. In 1985, the institute took
over the U.S. Film Festival, renaming it the Sundance Film Festival in
1991. Since then, the annual festival has celebrated independent film,
many new movies and stars that may otherwise have been lost in the
Hollywood Shuffle. Redford is also a partner in the Sundance Film Channel
on cable television, a showcase for independent film.
Redford was
nominated for the 1974 Best Actor in a Leading Role Academy Award for The
Sting (1973). The Sting marked the second pairing of Redford, Paul Newman
and George Roy Hill. The trio had previously come together on 1969’s
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In 1981 Redford won the Academy Award
for Best Director (1980). In 19995 Redford was nominated twice for Quiz
Show (1994) in the Best Director and Best Picture categories. The film won
neither award. In 2002 Redford received an honorary Oscar for his role as
an inspiration to independent and innovative filmmakers. In 2005, Redford
was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors. The Kennedy Center honors
artists for their lifetime contribution to the arts.
As
of present, Redford has starred in 62 television and film roles including,
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, All The President’s Men
and Barefoot in the Park among others. He has directed six films: Ordinary
People, The Milagro Beanfield War, A River Runs Through It, Quiz Show, The
Horse Whisperer and The Legend of Bagger Vance.
