The Wild Bunch

Less an organization than a loose grouping centering around a few core members with a resolving cast of characters floating in and out of the picture, the Wild Bunch was known by many names. The Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, Butch Cassidy’s Gang, Kid Curry’s Gang, etc., etc. Cassidy himself wanted to call the group The Train Robber’s Syndicate, but the name never stuck.

Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and Harvey Logan were considered members of the gang. After the Ketchum Gang disbanded, Will Carver and “The Tall Texan” Ben Kilpatrick joined the gang as well. Logan’s mentor, “Flat Nose” George Currie rode with the gang a number of times as did Cassidy’s best friend, Elzy Lay.

Bub Meeks, Tom O’Day and Walt Punteney enjoyed short-lived runs with the Wild Bunch. Ben Kilpatrick’s girlfriend, Laura Bullion is also said to have joined the outlaws on at least one occasion.

Joe Walker helped the outlaws out on occasion in Utah, usually setting up relay horses for the bandits escape. Another Utah resident, C.L. “Gunplay” Maxwell is often referred to as a Wild Bunch wannabe.

Tom McCarty and Matt Warner rode with Butch Cassidy on occasion and could be considered satellite members of the Wild Bunch.

A number of other bandits rode with the Wild Bunch from time to time, including William Cruzan, Bert Charter, and possibly even Harry Tracy.

Perhaps a better question would be who wasn’t in the Wild Bunch?

(This page will attempt to document everyone who has ridden with the Wild Bunch. Stay tuned for updates.)
